SAP and Mahindra & Mahindra join hands to digitally empower the girl force of India
New Delhi, India — October 30, 2019 —SAP India and Mahindra & Mahindra join forces to scale their efforts towards Digital India by educating 10,000 girl children by 2020. The aim is to achieve a common goal- quality education and equal digital access for the girl child.
“The government has launched various schemes such as ‘Beti Padhao Beti Bachao’ to promote equality in terms of education in the country. It is our vision to provide for equal opportunities to the girl child for their development and growth. We are happy to see corporates like SAP India and Mahindra & Mahindra taking the mantle and coming together to help the nation progress”, says Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
While women account for nearly half of India’s population, around only 25% of the workforce is female. The literacy level continues to remain around 46% in rural areas and girls continue to lack access to quality education. To prepare for the wave of digital transformation the country is currently experiencing, building digital skills is essential. Hence the need for programs to provide equal opportunities and train the future workforce of India.
Code Unnati, SAP’s flagship initiative, equips youth and children with quality STEM education and Digital Literacy. The focus of the training module is to impart digital literacy and foster female workforce. The collaboration with Nanhi Kali, will enable girls to complete ten years of basic schooling, improve regularity in attendance and provide a friendly ecosystem for them to thrive.
The crippling female illiteracy in India leads to a gender skewed workforce. It is against this background, that the collaboration aims to create academic ecosystem, access to affordable quality education, improve the learning level among girls, and sensitize the community & citizens towards importance of education. This initiative contributes to the UN Sustainable Development Goals of - No Poverty, Quality Education, Decent Work & Economic Growth, and Partnership for the Goals.
“Nanhi Kali is India’s largest project with a single purpose, ensuring that girls attend school with dignity and attain quality education. We are delighted to partner with SAP India to add the digital literacy dynamic to this noble cause of educating Nanhi Kalis across the nation.” Parthasarathy V S, Group CFO and Group CIO Mahindra Group

Together the programs will provide support across the nation including places such as Maharashtra (Mumbai), Gujarat (Bharuch), West Bengal (Kurseong, Jorebungalow, Kalimpong, Rangliot, Gorubathan) and further expand training to 5,000 girls among the aspirational district of Karnataka; and 1,000+ girls in Sravasti and Varanasi regions in Uttar Pradesh, thus educating 10,000 girls by 2020.
“Since Code Unnati’s inception in 2017, over a million children (of which 52% are girls) across 500 centers covering 14 states have been trained under our digital curriculum. Our collaboration with Nanhi Kali will help us further skill the girl children and achieve the goal of a Dignity led Digitally skilled nation.” Sindhu Gangadharan, SVP and Managing Director, SAP Labs India.
